The Elders 父 老
Artist Statement
What are the Chinese cultural and traditional symbols that we can identify in Hong Kong? End of last year I was engaged with a "Thanksgiving" ceremony, which was held once every ten years in Ha Tsuen, which is an old village located in the North West part of the New Territories. What makes this tradition on going for several hundred years? The lion dance? crafts? ceremony? In my opinion, it is the People who carry forward their tradition from generations to generations. There were over hundred of village elders dressed in traditional long dresses during the “Thanksgiving” ceremony. All of them wore red “elder” badges to signify their status in the community. I decided to capture the movements of the elders instead of the lion dance! Being torn between modernization and tradition, these elders struggle to sustain the value of their culture and identity for their next generation.
